The horror genre has been extremely popular ever since the first films were made, and they can be traced back to the first experimental shorts, shot in the mid 1800's, where early filmmakers were playing around with lighting and strings for puppets.
It's a fact- people enjoy being scared. I asked around my friends and family, and most of the people I asked said that they enjoyed being scared in one way or another. I personally hate being scared. I like knowing what's going on and I definitely hate jump scares- something that was very popular among the people I asked.
I looked into the BFI's statistics for 2014, and surprisingly, the horror genre wasn't as high up on the list as i would have thought, what with films such as 'Annabelle' and 'Insidious' coming out last year. The genre came 11th on the BFI's statistical chart, something that i would not have expected listening to what friends and family said about horror films. Maybe more people enjoy watching horror films at home, spending less money and getting that scared sensation afterwards where you dont feel quite alone in your bedroom.
