Research post no.1- se7en title sequence

Se7en, directed by David Fincher isn't a horror film, more of a thriller. But the title sequence for the film has been massively influential for film makers and their opening sequences. Even though it is early to be thinking about the details of my own opening sequence, I love researching and looking around at other film openings. Again, although it isn't a horror film opening, it blurs the lines and could come under the horror genre, giving the audience an insight, through the use of sound and the backward playing music, the images flashed in a scattered disconnected manner which is probably a link to the serial killer, John Doe, himself.
The opening also sets the tone for the film, which a film opening has to do. The sequence is, in my opinion a brilliant one, setting up the tone, mood and atmosphere for the on coming film perfectly. the dark colours used really reflect the gritty undertones of the whole film, and the shocking images of mutilated heads that are being stuck into John Does journals give the audience an idea of what to expect from this film. The opening sequence is full of clues of what crimes or themes to be expecting from within the film, such as the book, where words are being highlighted or blacked out or the part where what looks like to be an american dollar bill where the word 'god' is being cut out.
Overall, the opening is brilliantly executed, and I will definitely be taking and tweaking aspects of this, such as possibly the shaving of the finger tips or the pictures of mutilated people to be using in my own horror film opening.
Lauren.
