Research post no.2- True Detective title sequence

True Detective's title sequence perfectly captures the dark and surreal atmosphere of the following programme. I absolutely love the whole 'images within an image' thing, as I think that this allows the more savvy member of the audience to see that there is more than one side to an object, a city or a person. The use of the greyish, muted colour palette, gives a more dreamy, kind of dull or dimmed mood to the opening, which it's anything but.
Going back to the use of images inside images, many of the bigger pictures feature moving pictures of the city and it's infrastructure. This shows, in my opinion, how intertwined the people of the Louisiana town are with the toxic city. The town's industrial factories have a looming presence over the town and its people, like some sort of god figure- always watching, but never interfering with it's goings on, instead, just silently shaking its head at the monstrosities taking place in its name. The use of fragmented portraits, where some of the people shown are missing or built by the town's industrial buildings use the humans as sort of windows into parts of the landscape. this is a, again in my opinion, a fantastic way of showing or creating characters that are internally divided. It makes sense to show the characters in this graphic style; built out of the place that they live, revealing characters through their locations, as this is a main theme of the show.
the use of music and sound also ties into that idea. The song used; The Handsome Family's "Far from any road", is a classic country song, with the use of that signature guitar and voice twang. This creates a nice basis for the visuals, allowing the audience to understand the sort of location of the show, and the general basis for the narrative. even the lyrics give us an insight to this narrative; speaking about looming shadows and blood, foreshadowing the narrative to come, it's as if the song was written for the show, it fits so well. But I wont spoil the show fort hose who haven't watched it, and if you haven't, I highly recommend.
Lauren.
